Power Outage Night™

With a huge chunk of my state powerless this afternoon it's the perfect time to do some self-promotion for a little program I came up with some time ago that has attracted zero attention and no media coverage since its unveiling a couple of years ago. It's actually fun and educational - and when combined with toast, juice and milk - is part of a balanced breakfast that can help build strong bodies.

It's called Power Outage Night™ (and I put a little ™ on it to make it look all official and well-developed.) Here it is for your review or trial. It's just a simple little way to temporarily rid your life of the technological and informational clutter we all deal with ever more frequently.

It's not for everyone, as silence scares the crap out of some people and they don't know how to deal with their own thoughts (or an actual conversation) if they aren't accompanied by music blasting in their ear canals while they play Guitar Hero as they watch American Idol and then fall asleep (or pass out) to Stephen Colbert on their TVs, to be awakened overnight by the vibration of incoming emails on the Blackberry or iPhone and music from the alarm clock at sunrise signaling it's time to do it all over again. Coffee, Alcohol, Repeat™. (Might have to trademark that one, too.)

  • This reminds me a lot of Ariel Stalling' "52 Nights Unplugged", in which one night a week, she does not allow herself to use anything with a screen.

I've been itching to try it.

  • Thank God it's not a Jack-Daniels-Outage Night™. I forsee funny Tom Bodet spots in anticipation of a warm and humid evening in miami spent smacking mosquitos and sipping mojitos.

  • I recall as a small kid growing up in South Texas (McAllen), we would frequently lose power during thunderstorms or hurricanes. And it was alway a blast. One night that really stands out in my memory was when my Dad fired up a Coleman lantern and Mom pulled out an Erma Bombeck book and read it to us... the whole damn thing.

Now, on occasion, but not often enough, my wife, teenagers and I will have what we call "Family Date Night" where we'll play games or, even better, go to the trashiest bowling alley we can find for "White Trash Bowling." We each have our own white trash names, which we call each other the whole evening. And we put on our best hic accents, too.

And, for the record, my WT name is "Ray," the wife is "Tammie," my girls are "Vickie" and "Jodie." And my son is "Skeeter."

  • We tried that experiment in January 07 and after a couple of days, we broke down and bought generator, worth every precious penny spent. We've built an ARK to enshrine it.

We've also started a new church, Our Lady of the Power Plant. Come Join us!

  • Power Outage Night is called a Hurricane Party down here. Thanks to FPL, nothing except the 1.21 jigawatt Delorean has power after them. Jack-Daniels-Outage-Night is the same thing as Power-Outage-Night-Hurricane-Party
