New York Times Hates America
...and in particular, Virginia.
In their current campaign to promote their travel site, an apparent rival to Lonely Planet, The New York Times has been using this campaign on the web and in print. Showing a world map, the Times gives us helpful markers, such as "How To Save" while in Ireland, "What to Know" in Ghana, "Where to Dance" in Spain, etc.
The United States gets one marker, and it's the only negative marker. "Where Not to Eat" is reserved for what appears to be southern VA. (Click image to enlarge.)

"What to drink" in Mexico? I hope they're not talking about water.

I would never eat in South Virginia but that's only cuz the NYTimes tells me.

I think that's a country-wide reference -- and the idea was to offend as few people as may read the New York Times (yet still coastal enough for an "unspecific" arrow.)
And I love that the one in the US is for food. That's what we're good at. Food and debt.
Anyway, here's a short list of where not to eat: Arby's, Applebee's, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, any Vietnamese restaurant in Harrisburg, PA, any sushi restaurant in West Virginia, 78% of the restaurants in NYC, any Korean restaurant that is disturbingly situated near a pet store.

Anywhere in NW NJ too.

Good point, James. It likely is a countrywide reference.
So it's official. The NYT is an anti-American rag. Or at least anti American food.
I notice 7-11 is not on the short list. Good thing. Love the sausage egg and cheese english muffin. (Free orange juice comes with it!) (Free Dasani water when you buy the 24oz coffee! Also a free USA today - speaking of worthless rags.)

Knew I could bait the Roanokers or Richmonders.

I'm sure the NY Times thinks we're too backwards to even read.

I'm pretty sure they look down on anyone not residing within "The City."
By RFB, at March 19, 2007 at 11:10 AM
Does that Dasani come with benzyne? 'Cause I get cranky without my morning benzyne.

Are you kidding? They're looking down on anyone not residing "on the island."
Also: when was the last time anyone paid for a USAToday? Aren't they just the official newspaper of "free newspapers" ?

Hey, James. I'll be in Dallas next week. (literally across the street from Firehouse) We should get together for some burritos. Or a Corona.
