Fair and Balanced

He embodied like no other what the Fourth Estate is supposed to represent: he tried to keep the lying politicians honest.
I don't take much note when well-known people pass away. I didn't know them. They're gone and that's sad for their families and friends. But with Russert, I feel like a beloved uncle has died.

I'm so with you on this. He didn't cut off his guests, but he held their feet to the fire with facts and research, all with good natured civility and a charming everyman sophistication. He was exactly the kind of man journalism needs more of, respected by citizens and politicians of both parties. There are few I would put in his class, but among those, several are associated with Fox -- Britt Hume, Juan Williams, Tony Snow. It's just that they are counteracted by the likes of Hannity, who tends to drown out sanity with his yappy dog approach.
