BMW - The Car Preferred by Spoiled Brats

Disappointed that this commercial made it to air, as it is not in keeping with the quality of work BMW usually puts out. There are plenty of ways to illustrate "accept no substitute," without resorting to this.

Ungrateful child shops with mom for a toy train. He will only accept the top-of-the-line expensive train. Flash forward to his teen years and the 80s bedecked ass has his eye on the Les Paul when his dad wants to buy the less expensive guitar. Now he is an adult and growing up rich and demanding has taught him that he will accept only that which he has set his greedy, little childish heart on.

Dumb idea.

That Crazy Bavarian Humor

BMW isn't known for doing humor, but they've done it well in this ad for their "pre-owned" vehicles. Wish I knew the agency, not that it matters. And for all I know this is an old ad, though I'd never seen it until this morning. Rather, I wish I knew the writers. They've sold the lasting value of a BMW while poking fun at the prestige. I'm not sure of the relationship between the dad and the scout leader in this spot, but they could be taken for exes as her contempt for him seems born of familiarity.

'Course, I'm predisposed to like most things BMW does, as I've always lusted for their cars. They just seem...I don't know...tighter?

Volkswagen Continues Dumb Name Tradition

Here's Volkswagen's entry into the truck market. They're calling it "Amarok," an Inuit name for "wolf."

"This name fits the characteristics of our pickup perfectly, which will set new standards in its class," says Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Sure, Stephan, you walking book of clichés. What else could you have said?

When you've already gone down the road of stupid names, (EOS, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Phaeton, Touareg, Routan) I guess you just have to keep going. Much better, I think, to go the "series" route, like BMW. But you pay extra for that.

Outrace the Polizei in Your BMW

I would love an old BMW 2002, the car preferred by many German terrorists of the 1970s. In this ad, I'm not sure what is happening. A plane takes off and lands and then a 2002 does a slalom course through some cones while three BMW technicians look on. A stern announcer speaks over some lame, warbly jazz.

How very German. Was ist lost?

Can I Get That in a Faded Denim?

BMW's new concept addresses fuel-efficiency without messing with the fuel part at all.

I suppose it's safe since there's still a frame underneath, but it'll be a much lighter car without all that shiny, painted metal. And in the future, body shops will employ tailors.
